Somatosensory evoked potentials evaluated in normal subjects and spinal cord-injured patients

Abstract

|
Normal somatosensory evoked potentials(SEP) from stimulation of tibial nerve were recorded in order to provide basic data for clinical use in evaluating patients with spinal cord lesions. Thirty adult volunteers, free of neurological disease, and ten patients were tested. Early waves were far more consistent than late waves which were irregular and variable in peak and latency. The primary evoked response (P1,) was visualized only in 65% of normal subjects.
Clinically, the absence of a SEP from tibial nerve stimulation indicates the spinal cord lesion is complete and no clinical recovery can be expected, the presence of such an evoked response doesn¢¥t always predict a favorable neurological outcome, and recovery of SEP wave pattern may precede major clinical improvement.
